This last week, the Anna High School Choir traveled to Jacksonville, FL to perform in the Barbershop Harmony Society Youth Chorus Festival. We had an amazing trip, and a resounding success at the contest.
The scores on a scale from 1 to 35. In 2018, we received a rating of Good (a score of  <13), with a score of 5.7. In 2019, we received rating of Excellent (a score of 13 to 17), with a score of 13.1, just barely getting into the Excellent rating. This year, we received a rating of Excellent, with a score of 16.5! This is .5 points away from the next rating bracket of Outstanding. We received some individual scores from a few judges in the 19, and almost 20 area, which is pretty close to the highest rating bracket, Superior. So our choir made another large jump this year. In just 3 years, we've tripled our score and have made incredible progress. This continues the Anna Choir streak of always having improved scores at contest! Everyone was so excited to see what Anna High School had accomplished!

I wanted to highlight a few shining moments from the weekend:
On Friday night, after the performance, students went to go pick up pizza from a local place around the corner from the hotel. This was for all the students to have after our debrief. They ran into a friend of mine who I sang with in college. He talked to the kids about how he really enjoyed there performance, and at this time, the students were a little bummed that they didn't score into the Outstanding Ranking. Well he lifted their spirits a little bit and headed on his way. When the chaperone talked to the cashier to pay for the pizza, surprise, my old friend had paid for pizza for the whole choir. The kids were floored, and the chaperone said from their on out, the disappointment disappeared from the two boys she was with and they turned their focus to being excited about the next year.
After we received our rating, I did a debrief with our kids to talk with the students about the scores and to lift their spirits since they were a little disappointed that we had not scored into Outstanding. I open it up to the kids to share their thoughts. This has become a little bit of a tradition for the kids, and it's always very emotional. There were several students who shared that choir is their home and the choir is where they feel like they belong. Of course, this got very emotional for all of those in the room. When we have these moments each year, it fills me up with so much joy and reminds of how worth it all of the work for the trip is.

Thank you for your support and encouragement, Mr. Rohovit, AHS Choir Director.
